He graduated from the Danish School of Journalism in 1988. Steffen Kretz joined DR in 1993 as a reporter at TV-Avisen. From 1996-2004 he was host and editor of DR’s journalistic flagship Søndagsmagasinet. In January 2006, he was posted to the Middle East as Danish Radio’s correspondent.

Before that, he had produced DR’s international interview series, De Skrev Historie, which was broadcast on DR1 in the fall of 2005. Among those interviewed were Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi, former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former South African President F.W. de Klerk and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

For a long period, he was editor and host of DR-TV’s popular foreign affairs magazine, Horisont. From 2008-09 he was DR’s climate correspondent and from 2010 Kretz has been both host of TV Avisen and traveling correspondent in the world’s hot spots. In 2017 – 2023 he was a foreign correspondent in Washington.

Steffen Kretz’ book “Looming Storm – The Attack on The Capitol Was Not The End, It Was The Beginning”, which analyzes the United States as a nation characterized by crisis and division, has become a bestseller. He is currently an international correspondent for DR.
